TMJ Issues

The TMJ stands for Tempomandibular Joint. Everybody has them. TMD is Dysfunction of that joint of the muscles, ligaments and tendons that control the joint. TMD is typically an orthopedic issue that dentists treat. Dysfunction in the TMJ can be issues with the ball and socket parts of the joints, issues with the disk that helps the joint slide smoothly, or a basically healthy joint with angry muscles for various reasons, in addition to other neurological or vascular issues. It has been reported that up to 60% of migraine sufferers have some sort of TMD. At our office we spend a lot of time with TMD patients, interviewing, assessing the joint function, and determining whether treatment is needed. We utilize Joint Vibration Analysis and Jaw Tracking that allows us to visually see on a computer screen what is going on in your joints and muscles. This is a quick and non-invasive diagnostic aid that we feel is invaluable. We also use these tests to monitor progress and improved function. We also utilize radiographs, Cone Beam Scans and possibly MRI to assess the issues. Treatment could include intraoral orthotics worn during the day or night or one for the day time and one for the night time. Therapeutic and diagnostic injections can be used as well as other physiotherapy modalities such as TENS units and Ultrasound treatments. Many respond quite well, some will need a referral for additional treatments.

Symtoms of TMD or more broadly called Craniofacial Pain may include popping or clicking in the joints, jaw joint pain, headaches, limited ability to open mouth, pain or ringing in the ear(s), tender and sensitive teeth.
